Once upon a time, in the picturesque village of Paciano, nestled amongst the rolling hills of Umbria, there occurred a most extraordinary event. The townspeople awoke one morning to find their narrow cobblestone streets covered in a veritable avalanche of pasta.
There were spaghetti strands draped over balconies, fusilli spirals caught in the branches of olive trees, and a cascade of penne tumbled down the steps of the ancient church. It was a truly astonishing sight, and the villagers couldn’t believe their eyes.
As the news of the pasta phenomenon spread, Paciano’s residents gathered in the town square, exchanging theories and speculations about the mysterious occurrence. Some suggested it was a culinary miracle, while others joked that the village was experiencing a carb-based apocalypse.
The townspeople couldn’t resist poking fun at the situation, and soon the village was abuzz with pasta-themed jokes and memes. Photos of cats tangled in spaghetti, cleverly captioned “Pasta la vista, baby!” and images of village landmarks buried under mountains of pasta with the tagline “Welcome to Paciano, Italy’s Carb Capital!” went viral on social media.
Among the crowd were Susan and her friends, who had previously solved mysteries in their beloved village. Intrigued by the pasta enigma, they decided to investigate the matter and uncover the truth behind the peculiar incident.
They began by interviewing the local pasta makers, Giuseppe and Maria, an older couple who used to run a Pasta Fresca shop in the neighboring town of Castiglione del Lago. Giuseppe and Maria, however, reported no recent accidents or unusual events. Next, they spoke with Mandy, who helps organizing the Paciano market, but again, no clues were revealed.
Determined to solve the mystery, Susan and friends decided to retrace the trail of pasta back to its source. They followed the winding ribbons of pici and the scattered piles of farfalle until they stumbled upon a hidden cave on the outskirts of the village.
Cautiously, they entered the dark cavern, guided only by the flickering light of their torches. As they ventured deeper into the cave, they discovered an extraordinary sight: a vast underground chamber, filled with an enormous, ancient pasta-making machine.

The machine, a marvel of engineering and magic, was clearly centuries old, yet still functional. It appeared that someone had inadvertently activated the contraption, causing it to produce copious amounts of pasta, which had burst forth from the cave and blanketed the village.
As Susan and her friends examined the machine, they discovered a hidden inscription written in some kind of Latin.
The inscription read:
“In temporibus adversis, donum Pacianensibus, Magus fecit, hanc machinam mirabilem, In necessitudine, pasta apparebit, Sustinens vicum, dum sol lucet ibi.”
Translating the text for the rest of the group, Susan revealed that it said:
“In times of hardship, a gift for the people of Paciano, A sorcerer has crafted, this wondrous machine, In the hour of need, pasta shall appear, Sustaining the village, as long as the sun shines here.”
Realizing that the people of Paciano could capitalize on the unexpected pasta surplus, Susan and her friends came up with a plan to turn the situation to their advantage. They rallied the villagers and proposed hosting the world’s largest pasta party, inviting people from all over the world to partake in the delicious, magical pasta.
In preparation for the festival, Giuseppe and Maria called upon of their friends from Il Centro Sociale per Anziani and they worked tirelessly to create the most delicious pasta sauce, using secret ingredients from their gardens and techniques known only to the Pacianesi. The combination of the ancient pasta and their delectable sauce was truly a feast to remember.

When the festivities finally came to an end, the villagers deactivated the ancient pasta machine and sealed the cave, but not before thanking the long-forgotten sorcerer for their unexpected windfall. The Great Pasta Mystery of Paciano became a legend, a tale passed down through generations. And though the village returned to its peaceful, idyllic state, the people of Paciano would never forget the day their streets were filled with pasta, laughter, and the unbreakable spirit of their community.
